The production of silicon carbide involves a complex process. It typically begins with the extraction of high-purity silica from quartz or sand. This silica undergoes a carbothermal reduction process, where it reacts with carbon in the form of petroleum coke or coal at extremely high temperatures (approximately 2000 to 2700 degrees Celsius) in an electric furnace. The reaction forms silicon carbide crystals.


Following the reaction, the crude silicon carbide is crushed, milled, and graded to the desired particle size. Subsequently, it undergoes various purification steps to remove impurities. The purified silicon carbide can then be classified into different grades based on particle size and other specifications.


The production process can be modified for specific applications, including the production of different types of silicon carbide, such as black or green silicon carbide, each with distinct characteristics. The resulting material is widely used in various industrial applications, benefiting from its exceptional hardness, thermal conductivity, and resistance to wear and corrosion.
